🎬 As Halloween creeps closer and the Crescent City prepares for its most hauntingly fun celebration—Krewe of BOO!—there’s no better way to get in the spirit than by indulging in a few spine-tingling films that take full advantage of New Orleans' gothic charm, moss-draped mystery, and supernatural swagger.
From voodoo queens to haunted mansions, NOLA isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a main character. Here’s a curated list of horror movies and spooky thrillers that were either filmed in New Orleans or take place right here in our haunted hometown.

🦇 Interview with the Vampire (1994)
Blood, brooding, and balconies! This cult classic, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, opens in 18th-century New Orleans and uses our historic streets to full, dramatic effect. Decadent and eerie, it captures the city’s romantic decay and timeless mystique. You’ll never look at a wrought-iron balcony the same way again.
🧛 Interview with the Vampire (2022–Present, AMC)
This recent AMC series breathes new (undead) life into Anne Rice’s world with a modernized retelling, filmed on location in New Orleans. The show oozes atmosphere—cathedrals, courtyards, and creole mansions provide the perfect setting for Lestat’s seductive darkness.

🎭 American Horror Story: Coven (Season 3)
Okay, so it’s technically TV, but let’s be real—this season deserves a mention. Set (and largely filmed) in the Garden District, Coven drips with Southern Gothic style and centers around a school for witches. With real-life references to infamous figures like Madame LaLaurie, this one blurs the line between legend and lore.

🕯 The Skeleton Key (2005)
A modern bayou thriller with a heavy dose of hoodoo, this film dives into the supernatural folklore of the Louisiana swamps. With haunting plantation houses and chilling rituals, The Skeleton Key taps into local superstition in a way that feels a little too real.
🧟 Hatchet (2006)
This blood-soaked slasher leans full throttle into backwoods horror. Set in a misty, alligator-ridden part of the swamp, the film is a love letter to 80s gore-fests—and the sequels don’t skimp on the chaos either. It’s campy, ridiculous, and totally Krewe of BOO-approved.

🕷 The Beyond (1981)
Italian horror director Lucio Fulci set this cult-favorite nightmare inside a New Orleans hotel built atop one of the seven gateways to Hell (as one does). Equal parts surreal and terrifying, The Beyond offers a hazy, blood-soaked vision of Louisiana horror that’s pure grindhouse gold.
🧛 Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)
Is it historically accurate? Absolutely not. Is it wildly entertaining? You bet. Filmed partially in New Orleans, this alt-history action-horror romp imagines Honest Abe as a vampire slayer—and the Big Easy plays host to plenty of undead drama.

🕸 The Haunted Mansion (2023)
This spooky-fun Disney remake leaned heavily on NOLA’s eerie elegance. Set in a creaky old New Orleans manor and filled with ghostly gags, it’s a family-friendly gateway into the haunted heart of the city.
🧛 True Blood (2008–2014)
Set in the fictional Bon Temps, Louisiana, this vampire-meets-small-town-soap-opera series brought Southern gothic back into pop culture. Filmed across Louisiana with heavy NOLA inspiration, it’s sultry, bloody, and brimming with supernatural swagger.

👻 Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964)
A classic psychological thriller drenched in Southern Gothic atmosphere, this black-and-white gem stars Bette Davis as a tormented recluse in a decaying Louisiana mansion. Filmed at Houmas House Plantation and in Baton Rouge, it oozes vintage Southern spook.

🩸 Angel Heart (1987)
A neo-noir psychological horror film with a Faustian twist, Angel Heart stars Mickey Rourke as a private detective unraveling a chilling mystery that leads straight to the dark heart of New Orleans. Voodoo, jazz, and blood-soaked revelations await.

🧛♂️ Dracula 2000 (2000)
Produced by Wes Craven, this slick, gothic update of the Dracula mythos brings the vampire king to modern-day New Orleans. Expect Y2K tech, religious relics, and plenty of NOLA skyline shots. Because where else would Dracula go but the city of eternal nightlife?
🕯 Mayfair Witches (2023–Present, AMC)
Also based on Anne Rice’s novels, this series follows a neurosurgeon who discovers she’s the heiress to a dynasty of powerful witches—centered in New Orleans, of course. Filmed on location, the show blends eerie magic with gorgeous Southern Gothic visuals, proving the Big Easy was born for the supernatural.
🎃 Get in the Mood for BOO!
These flicks aren’t just frightening—they’re festive. Whether you're throwing on your costume, prepping your float, or planning your viewing party before the Krewe of BOO! parade and Monster Mash afterparty, this lineup of local chills is sure to get you howling.
So dim the lights, pour yourself a potion (or a Sazerac), and let New Orleans’ silver screen spooks set the tone for the most spirited Halloween celebration around. 🎭💀👻
